Driftless Area
Rating: 3, temperature: 78 ℉, condition: Light Flurries.
Once again, the major storms missed our area completely with only gentle, soaking rains hitting us this weekend. Creeks are clear and a bit low with temps in the mid 50s to 60s.The sun is the limiting factor. When it is shining on the water, and when it raises water temperature rapidly, fishing slows to a crawl. Finding cooler temp creeks and finding shade are key when the sun is out!
Midges in the morning have a few fish rising, and sporadic hatches of craneflies, caddis, and lighter colored mayflies throughout the day have fish eating on the surface. The best dry fly action is on beetles, ants, and small grasshoppers.
Subsurface fishing is still best on thinner bodied patterns (pheasant tails, midge larvae, etc) but fish are still eating scuds and small squirrels when the sun is off the water.
Mousing has been excellent lately!
