Driftless Area
Rating: 4, temperature: 56 ℉, condition: Heavy Rain.
Brrrrr! Fall weather has arrived early in the Driftless. The cold nights mean you do not have to get up at the crack of dawn to get out and fish. Lets things warm up a bit.
Creeks are clear to slightly stained and flowing at normal summer levels. Temperatures are in the lower to high 50s.
First thing in the morning fish will be keying in on sub surface flies. Midge larvae, blue winged olive nymphs (small, thin bodied and dark), and scuds are working well.
As things warm up, terrestrials are still the food of choice, especially on breezy days. Beetles, hoppers and ants are still deadly.
In the late afternoon and evening look for bulging rises as fish are starting to feed on olives and other tiny mayflies and midges. These hatches are not super strong, but you have a chance to see surface feeding each evening.
