Another cool day in the Driftless! This has been the perfect summer for trout fishing.Creeks are all in the mid 50s to low 60s and running clear. There is no worry of water getting too warm to fish so far this year.
There have been clouds of tricos on many creeks in the mornings, getting fish to rise and also getting them to look up for dries throughout the day.
For most of the day, we have been fishing smaller terrestrials or indicator flies and fishing a dropper below them.
Subsurface fishing (droppers included) has been excellent with small to tiny bead heads (16-22) with a thin profile being the best. Pink squirrels, scuds and the rest of the normal flies are working too.
In the evenings there are sporadic emergences of midges as well as some egg laying caddis still around, but the terrestrial/dropper will work right into night.
This is prime mouse fishing time!
