Driftless Area
Rating: 5, temperature: 71 ℉, condition: Cloudy.
The thermometer at the bank read 55 degrees when I opened the shop this morning! The incredible summer weather continues. Waters are a bit low, which is normal in the summer, but the temperatures are outstanding. They are all in the mid 50s to low 60s and running clear too. There is no worry of water getting too warm to fish so far this year.
There have been clouds of tricos on many creeks in the mornings, getting fish to rise and also getting them to look up for dries throughout the day.
For most of the day, we have been very successful fishing smaller terrestrials or indicator flies and fishing a dropper below them.
Subsurface fishing (droppers included) has been excellent with small to tiny bead heads (16-22) with a thin profile being the best. Pink squirrels, scuds and the rest of the normal flies are working too.
In the evening, fish will start to rise again for midges.
