Driftless Area
Rating: 3, temperature: 82 ℉, condition: Light Flurries.
Let the cooler temperatures begin!Temps start to dip today, ending up in the high 60s and low 70s by the weekend. With these cooler temperatures it is much more comfortable to fish all day!
The sun is still the limiting factor as waters are low and clear. Fishing early and late, as well as finding shade will be key to catching fish. When the sun is off the water, the fishing is much better.
Tricos are still doing their thing early, and we have seen clouds of them on many more streams this season. A few tiny olives and midges are also hatching early and late.
Mid day fishing means terrestrials. A well drifted ant, hopper, or beetle will get crushed if it is close enough to undercut banks.
Subsurface flies are also solid, especially thin bodied flies with a bit of flash to them, or a heavy bottom rolling scud pattern fished deep.
