Driftless Area

Rating: 3, temperature: 87 ℉, condition: Light Flurries.

Warmer summer weather returns to the area.  Now that the cooler weather is gone, make sure to have a thermometer handy.  Any water temps over 65 will mean poor fishing, and anything over 70 can be lethal to trout.
Morning fishing and evening fishing have been great with fish looking up as long as the sun is not shining directly on the water.  We are starting to see more and more aquatic insects with midges and caddis leading the way.  However, terrestrials are still the ticket with fish eating everything from tiny ants and beetles to larger, chernobyl ant type patterns.
Subsurface flies have also been effective with no clear favorite.  Scuds, pink squirrels, midge larvae, flashy mayfly patterns...  They are all working.
Our preferred summer method of fishing is using a buoyant  indicator dry fly with a bead head tied on as a dropper.
