Driftless Area
Rating: 4, temperature: 63 ℉, condition: Windy.
Waters are clear to stained area wide. Streams are flowing well after some nice soaking rains, and water temps are excellent. This has been a very solid cranefly year, and the fish are gorging on cranes both surface and subsurface. Yesterday, during the clouds and mist, there was a heavy caddis hatch on some streams. That coupled with a sporadic emergence of yellow sallies and the beginning of our light colored mayfly hatches has meant excellent surface fishing lately.
The cloudy days and slightly high waters have also meant that subsurface fishing has been hot too. Scuds, thick bodied nymphs in gray, thin bodied nymphs in brown to red, and pink squirrels have been fishing the best.
The weather should be cloudy and drizzly and cool again all weekend.
