Driftless Area

Rating: 2, temperature: 18 ℉, condition: Cloudy.

We are in the mid winter crunch.  Streams in Iowa are showing a little shelf ice, but are mostly clear and flowing low.  Fishing is best when the air temps are at least 30 and the nights have some cloud cover to keep the heat in overnight.
Fishing has to be slowed to a crawl with heavily weighted midges, scuds, leeches, and pink squirrels rolled along the bottom of holes, or where springs come in.  Hatch activity is minimal with a few winter midges (black 18-22) popping off around 2-4 p.m. on the warmer days.
Remember snowshoes as well, as they can make walking the banks of some streams much easier!
