Driftless Area
Rating: 2, temperature: 35 ℉, condition: Windy.
After a pretty ugly day yesterday (although we have a couple reports of anglers catching fish yesterday!) it will begin to calm down quite a bit today. The wind will still be blowing from the east, but even that will start to calm down in the late afternoon.Scouting waters before work this morning we did see water that was clear on the edges and stained in the current as of 8:30 this morning. It is not nearly as bad as it looked or felt yesterday. Keep in mind the flood warnings for the area are for the main branch of the Kickapoo, not the tributaries that we fish.
With the weather and water being significantly colder than the past week, there is no need to head out early to find fish. Let the water warm up a bit.
Leeches, streamers, large scuds, and other attractor nymphs will do the job in the cloudy water. Smaller dark bodied nymphs, especially those with a bit of thickness (psycho prince, hare's ear, pink squirrel etc) will be the ticket in stained to clear water.
Fish put on the feed bag after high water. Fishing over the next few days will be great, just dress warmly.
