Driftless Area
Rating: 3, temperature: 65 ℉, condition: Partly Cloudy.
Waters were dropping and clearing yesterday by the afternoon. There were fish rising last night on some of the smaller streams. They are now clear to cloudy, and definitely fishable!
Water will continue to clear leaving a slight stain to the majority of the creeks for the weekend. Much nicer than crystal clear water.
Craneflies are hatching very well, and with the warmer and sunny weather today and tomorrow we should see a return of caddis too. Midges have been hatching in the mornings and evenings daily as well.
Sub surface fish are feeding on cranefly larvae, caddis larvae, scuds and other thicker bodied nymphs in the deeper spots. In the riffles they are taking smaller thin bodied nymphs and soft hackles.
There will be some gusty wind today, but it is from the west. You can escape most of it by fishing a north/south stream that has a bluff on the west side of it.
The rains did not do any major damage, and they have set up this weekend to be excellent for fishing.
