Driftless Area
Rating: 3, temperature: 74 ℉, condition: Heavy Rain.
Another warm night means the water barely dipped below 50 degrees. That is the magic temperature to keep insect and fish activity humming throughout the day today. If it weren't for the wind, the fishing would be great. This should be the last day of wind as a low front is pushed into the area. This means clouds and a chance of rain tonight which would do wonders for our clear waters and possibly bring some blue winged olives this weekend.
We have seen more midges, quill gordons, spring stoneflies, and a few black caddis hatching daily. Fish are feeding on the surface mostly when the sun is off the water. Otherwise scuds, stonefly nymphs, and caddis pupae are doing well sub surface.
Unless there is an inch or more of rain tonight (which is not forecasted) our ground is dry enough to not have to worry about any major runoff on most of our area creeks. A slight stain may be on the water this weekend, which would be a welcome break from our gin clear waters!
